Every week, some well-meaning art-supply clerk tells a customer that acrylic paint is the modern miracle—fast-drying, water-cleanup, and just as archival as oil. I'm here to call that nonsense. Acrylics are fantastic for studies, for plein-air sketches, for anyone who needs to finish a painting in one sitting. But if you're painting for posterity, for the museum walls of 2200, oil is still the king. Don't believe me? Let's talk chemistry, history, and the dirty little secret of acrylic aging.
Isn't Acrylic Paint More Durable Than Oil?
The short answer is no, not in the way you think. Oil paint 'dries' by absorbing oxygen in a chemical reaction that cross-links the oil into a solid, durable film (Drying oil, EPFL GraphSearch). That film, once fully cured, is incredibly stable—just look at the oil paintings from the Renaissance that are still vibrant after 500 years. That film can remain slightly soft and can be re-emulsified by solvents or even high humidity over decades. Why Did Acrylics Become So Popular Then?
Because they dry fast and are easy to use.
