Why Oil Still Rules: A Working Painter's Technique Primer

Most paint types have a place, but oil's slow drying, fat-over-lean layering, and unmatched depth make it the working painter's choice. Here's how to handle it like a pro.

Seventy percent of the world's paintings are in oil—that's not a statistic I made up, but a fact that underscores the medium's enduring dominance. For anyone serious about technique, oil paint isn't just one option among many; it's the benchmark. Its slow drying time, typically one to three weeks, gives you the freedom to blend, adjust, and layer in ways that acrylics and watercolors simply can't match (EBSCO / Study Rocket). This article is for the painter who wants to move beyond student sets and actually control the medium. We'll walk through the essential decisions, from surface prep to final varnish, with a specific recommendation at each step.

Start with the Right Ground

Before you touch color, think about what you're painting on. Today, canvas is the default, and you need to prime it. Gesso, a mixture of glue and gypsum or chalk, provides a stable surface that prevents oil from soaking into the fibers (Gesso, Getty). Master the Fat-Over-Lean Rule

This means each new layer should contain more oil (fat) than the one beneath it (Winsor & Newton). Thinner layers dry faster, so they go first; thicker, slower-drying layers go on top. If you reverse this, the top layer dries first and shrinks, pulling the paint apart. The practical upshot: start with a lean underpainting, perhaps thinned with turpentine or a fast-drying alkyd, and build up to richer, oil-heavy layers for the final passages. This isn't just theory—it's the reason a Rembrandt survives centuries while a hastily executed student painting cracks within years.

Layer for Luminosity: Glazing and Scumbling

Oil's transparency is its superpower. The Mona Lisa's sfumato effect, those soft transitions without visible brushstrokes, is built from nearly transparent layers (BBC News). What Can Go Wrong

I use a gloss varnish for most work, but a satin varnish for portraits to reduce glare. Spray or brush? I brush, because it evens out better on textured surfaces. Wait until the paint is fully cured—months, not weeks—and apply in a dust-free room. This isn't optional; it's the difference between a painting that lasts decades and one that looks dull and dirty in five years.
